Effective: 6/1/04
General administrative office hours for the College of Biological Sciences (CBS) are Monday through Friday, 7:45 am to 4:30 pm. A regular workday consists of eight hours of work with an unpaid lunch break of at least 30 minutes. Normal hours of work may vary by departmental unit and type of appointment.
You may request a flexible work arrangement that differs from standard operating hours.
Contact your supervisor to request flexible work hours. Supervisors approve flexible hours on a case-by-case basis. A supervisor approves or denies the flexible hours request based on staffing needs, the employee’s job duties, the employee’s work record, and the employee’s ability to temporarily or permanently return to a standard work schedule when needed. A flexible schedule must be appropriate for your job duties, may not negatively impact business needs, add expense, decrease efficiency, or impact customer service. Flexible scheduling should be arranged with reasonable notice. Your schedule should be the same each week and be uniform until changed by mutual agreement with your supervisor.
A request for a flexible work arrangement should be made within the following guidelines:
Start times: Between 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Lunch Break: An unpaid lunch break is required each workday to be a minimum of 30 minutes up to a maximum of 60 minutes. You may not skip a lunch break to leave early in lieu of taking lunch or skip meal breaks and count the time toward your 40-hour workweek or as overtime. If your CBS department requires coverage to be maintained during lunch hours, you may have to rearrange your lunch and break times to meet operational needs.
End times: 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Some examples of flexible work schedules include:
Total work time for the day must equal scheduled work hours.
A flexible work arrangement may be suspended or cancelled at any time. If your job status is exempt, you may need to depart from any flexible schedule as necessary to perform your job. If you job status is non-exempt, you may be asked to work overtime regardless of a flextime schedule.
(Note: If union contracts differ from this policy, the union contract applies.)
