Itasca Biological Station and LaboratoriesBird watchers at Itasca.

The Wildest Classroom in Minnesota

Established in 1909, Itasca Biological Station and Labs (IBSL) is one of the oldest and largest continuously-operated inland field training centers in the United States. The station is located within Itasca State Park, a pristine site for the study of diverse organisms in undisturbed habitats. At Itasca, all the concepts biology students learn about in textbooks come to life. It is experiential learning at its best in a retreat-like atmosphere amidst the pines, lakes and bogs of wilderness country in northern Minnesota.

For many students, field work at Itasca is the most memorable part of their experience at the University. In addition to being immersed in courses ranging from botany and ecology to molecular biology and neuroscience, students gain valuable experience conducting independent research projects. From molecules to ecosystems, Itasca offers a unique understanding of the biological world that is not available anywhere else in Minnesota!

Our next field biology session begins in May 2008. Courses are open to domestic or international students of any accredited college or university. Please contact the Program Coordinator for more information.
